Silent Hunter III is a submarine simulation video game developed by Ubisoft Romania and published by Ubisoft. It was released on 15 March 2005 for North America and 18 March for PAL countries on Microsoft Windows. Like its predecessor Silent Hunter II, it places the player in command of a German U-boat during World War II in the Atlantic theater.
Silent Hunter III features a fully dynamic campaign that allows players to experience various situations and outcomes on each play through. The game's engine automatically generates convoys, destroyers, task forces and other naval traffic for the player to engage at their discretion.
Along with a dynamic campaign, there are also historical single player missions. These include saving the Bismarck, sinking the Royal Oak in Scapa Flow, attacking a task force as the first Type XXI U-boat, sinking the USS Guadalcanal and avoiding capture as the U-505, sinking the HMS Barham as the U-331 and passing through the Strait of Gibraltar (in a nod to the movie Das Boot, the player commands U-96 in the Gibraltar mission).
Players can perform upgrades to their U-boat's equipment including the anti-aircraft gun, hydrophones, batteries, radar, sonar and more. Upgrades follow a technology tree that unlocks for upgrades as the war progresses.
Silent Hunter III has received many positive reviews. It received an aggregate score from Metacritic of 90 out of 100. IGN gave the game an 8.8 out of 10, noting its great presentation and visuals, but demeriting it for its tedious crew micromanagement. Videogamer gave the game a 7 out of 10, praising its career mode and modding potential, but criticising the flawed crew management and design.
Several patches were released to address numerous bugs and other unintended gameplay features. The latest version of the game is 1.4b.
